This edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand is a report on one of our favorite golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area, Rivers Edge Golf Club.  The golf course is a sensational design from the King himself, Arnold Palmer.  The recently departed Mr. Palmer created a real gem along the Shallotte River that provides golfers with both a unique golfing challenge as well as a tremendous golfing experience.  It is an exceptional golf course that all golfers can enjoy.

Rivers Edge provides a golfing experience that can be enjoyed by golfers of any age and any skill level.  The five sets of tees allow the course to be played from several yardages that can challenge even the sharpest of amateur golfers.  This is definitely not a “tee it high and let it fly” layout.  Attention to detail off the tee will serve golfers well.  Not a difficult driving course, but a thinkers driving course for sure.

Once off the tee box golfers are faced with a variety of landing areas and green complexes that give cause for alot of thinking and a premium on club selection.  A combination of streams and bunkers as well as waste area and marshes protect the greens.  It is important to chose the proper iron when attacking the pins at Rivers Edge.  A wrong choice or a poorly placed approach can lead to some big numbers on the scorecard.  That being said, the greens are large and very puttable.

Speaking of the greens, the putting surfaces were just changed out last summer from the Paspalum to Sunday Ultra-Dwarf Bermuda.  Now the greens handle the extreme heat that southeast North Carolina summers bring and make for consistently excellent putting for golfers to enjoy.  This change has made a huge difference in the playability of the course.  Now that the putting surfaces are as excellent as the design and layout of the course, Rivers Edge rockets to the front of the line of courses that golfers must play when visiting the area.

The bottom line is that Rivers Edge is 1 of the best golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area.  Period.  Do not miss a chance to get to it and experience the fun and the beauty of this great design by “The King”.
