On this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand we go to Prestwick Country Club to visit with PGA Head Professional Jay Smith to get some tips on how to play the par 3 No. 13th hole at is golf course.  Jay was a member of the Coastal Carolina University Men’s Golf Team from 1988 – 1992 so we know he can golf his ball.  What we want to get today are some tips on how to take on the Pete and P.B. Dye challenge that is Prestwick Country Club.  Let’ see what Jay has for us today.

The 13th hole at Prestwick is a fantastic par 3 over water to a multi-tiered green with bunkers on the right and left of the putting surface.  There is a very steep slope from the front to the back.  The lowest part of the green creeps right up to the edge of the water and runs up hill to the back of the green.  It is a pretty large green but it is very important to hit the proper part of the green based on pin location.

The tee shot can be intimidating because 90% of the shot is over the lake.  Jay stressed that making sure to have the proper yardage will help make club selection take some of the nerves out of the shot.  It is important not to get greedy here.  When hitting over water it most important to clear the water and land on the putting surface.  A score of par on a hole like this is always a good score.

After clearing the water hazard with the tee shot, Jay reminds us that making a 2-putt is the goal.  The green complexes at Prestwick are arguably the best on the beach so pay attention to the slope and speed of the green.  Make a solid stroke on the first putt and at least get it into a “gimme” range for the par putt.  Once again, making par on a par 3 over water is a very good score.  Getting too aggressive or losing focus can lead to a very big score on this hole.  That is not what we want.

Jay is usually available in the clubhouse and is willing to give playing tips to golfers before they head out to the first tee.  He wants everyone to enjoy their round and hopes to see them come back again and again to enjoy Prestwick Country Club.
