On  this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand we stop by River Oaks Golf Plantation to visit with our good buddy Scott Taylor to see some awesome changes made to their driving range.  As we have highlighted before, the driving range at River Oaks is quite nice.  It is located just a short drive from the clubhouse, adjacent to the 15th tee with plenty of space for golfers to either practice or to warm up before their round begins.  Some wonderful changes have been made recently and we are about to find out what they are.

Renovations have been underway along the entrance to the driving range and they look amazing now.  A carpeted ramp now leads to the hitting area in place of the old railroad tie staircase.   Surrounded by beautiful flower arrangements and mulch beds, the newly dedicated and named “American Veteran Memorial Driving Range” is open for business daily.  That is what the driving range at River Oaks is now proudly called.  Dedicated to honor and remember the sacrifices made by the men and women who have served this great country proudly.

There is a new “Heroes Honor Memorial” that is currently construction at the entrance to the range.  There is a sign that honors 52 retired soldiers, missing in action soldiers and killed in actions soldiers.  There are 5 medal of honor recipients in this group of honorees as well.  When the memorial is complete there will be a dedication ceremony and we will get all the details out on that when it is available.  It will be a wonderful day for sure.

The Myrtle Beach Junior Golf Foundation and the Golf School of Myrtle Beach operate out of their shop located on the back of the teeing area at the “American Veteran Memorial Driving Range”.  The MBJGF is celebrating its 7th year serving the youth of the Grand Strand,  They offer junior lessons year round with special 1/2 price lessons during the summer months.  Founder, Russ Brown and lead instructor Joe Carbonell have built the non-profit organization into a great place to bring young golfers to learn not only the skills it takes to play the game of golf but junior golfers also learn how to play the game as well.  As all us golfers know, those are two very different things.
