On this edition of Tee It  Up Grand Strand we look into the history and the story that is Meadowlands Golf Club.  More than two decades ago, WJ McLamb determined to build a golf course on the farm where he grew up. Problem was, he didn’t quite have enough land.  He did have enough property across the road for an 18-hole course and housing development.

A native of the county whose family has been in the area since the early 1800s or earlier, McLamb had decades of experience in earth moving, drainage, road and subdivision construction and project management.   Famed Atlanta-based architect Willard Byrd was hired to design the course on 380 acres fronting Hickman Road and Calabash Road. Construction began in 1995  on a design that would feature native hardwoods, pine and bald cypress as welll as freshwater lakes and Shingletree Canal.  These all come into play on several holes. It was designed with five sets of tees, a novelty at the time, and adopted a no-steel-cleats requirement, also a new idea.

“When I was a child, my grandparents lived in a wooden frame house on what is now Hole 7″ said McLamb.  “They raised eleven children there. I remember lying awake one night when I visited, looking straight through the roof at the stars. Life then, in the 1930s, was about hard work and family. It was also simple and peaceful. You could hear the birds all around. I wanted to reflect that feeling at Meadowlands. I want the golfers to enjoy the beauty of the land, and I want the residents to enjoy a relaxing, peaceful way of life.

The September 20th event begins with a catered lunch along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and few remarks before a 2pm shotgun 9-hole event.  Half of the players will play the front nine and half will play the back nine.  Entry is $50 per person. Registration deadline is September 10.

A portion of the registration fee goes to Canine Angels which rescues dogs from local kill-shelters and trains them to as service companions for military veterans. The dogs and their trainer, Rick Kaplan, are frequently seen in training on the grounds at  Meadowlands Golf Club.

Registration forms are available by calling the pro shop, 910-287-7529 and on the website www.meadowlandsgolf.com beginning in August.  Don’t miss out on this special day of golf, fun and celebration at one of the areas best and most fun golf courses.  Help the McLamb family celebrate 20 years at Meadowlands with hope for at least 20 more to come!
