We visit Prestwick Country Club on this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand.  We know what a great golf course it is.  Pete and P.B. Dye are the designers and they built an outstanding course with incredible holes that provide an amazing challenge for golfers of all ages and skill levels.  Today we talk with golf course superintendent, Paul Kaufman.  This is his time to boast about what he feels is the best feature of the golf course itself.

The putting greens are the pride and joy of Paul and his grounds crew.  They take a great deal of pride in them.  From how they look to how they putt, Paul and his crew work tirelessly to keep the surfaces at Prestwick Country Club as some of the best in the Myrtle Beach area. They have a very specific program that is followed every day to ensure the putting surfaces get the optimum care and continue to provide a second-to-none putting experience for the visiting golfers.  The time and energy is well worth it when the praises continue to roll in daily from players.

There is a specific surface management program that is followed routinely.  It involves frequent vertical mowing followed by a very light top dressing that they drag into the surface.  This is done on a weekly basis.  It keeps the putting surfaces about two weeks from tournament conditions at all times.  With their grass, light and frequent is the best recipe.  The vertical mowing is more like a very light green grooming that is done once or twice a week.  It keeps the grass very, very tight.  The top dressing is a light spread that is easy to work into the grass.  This ensure that it does not affect play in an adverse way.  In fact, after topping it with a light covering of water, it is so non-invasive that golfers do not even know that all this has been done.  The grounds crew actually will go through this process while play is going on during the day.  That is how perfectly unnoticeable it is to golfers.  It is the absolute best way to maintain the surface at optimum putting conditions.

Prestwick Country Club keeps the putting surfaces rolling at about a 10 on the stimp meter daily.  That allows for amazing putting conditions that can easily be sped up to 13 to 14 for tournaments or special events.  Paul and his hard working staff have really put the greens on the top of the list as far as quality goes in the Myrtle Beach area.  We LOVE putting on them!
