We take a trip to Murrells Inlet to Wachesaw Plantation East Golf Club on this edition of Tee It Up Grand Strand.  We talk with new PGA Head Professional, Mike Deluca to learn a bit about the golf course.  Mike has long been a friend of ours as an assistant at Prestwick County Club for years before making the move to Wachesaw East.  We are very happy for him and look forward having him around in his new location.

“I am very excited about the move to Wachesaw Plantation East.  I am grateful for my first crack at being a head professional” DeLuca said.  “I really enjoyed my years at Prestwick and I thank Jay and staff there for the amazing experience and fun times I had in the pro shop and on the the course.  Now it is time for this new venture and I feel like I have really hit the ground running here.”

The golf course opened in 1986 and was designed by Clyde Johnston.  It is a great low country design that incorporates much of the natural surroundings as the holes wind through the grounds of a former rice plantation.  Visiting golfers love the environment as they make their way around the course.  With 5 sets of tee boxes, this course is playable for golfers of all ages and ability levels.  Women especially love it.

There are actually two signature holes at Wachesaw Plantation East.  Mike tells us they are the two finishing holes which is pretty unique for a golf course  along the Grand Strand.  The 17 hole is a challenging par 5 that is a great risk-reward hole.  This fantastic hole gives the golfer numerous shot options due to the double fairway.  Once golfers pick the side they are going to play they still have to navigate the stream that runs in front of the green.  The safe play is to lay up and hit a wedge over the stream and carrying the false front.

The par 4 18th hole is an amazing hole to finish a round with.  It is a long, uphill hole with a wide landing area off the tee which sets up a good look at a long second shot into the green.  Mike says don’t let the water and bunkers short and left of the green intimidate the approach shot.  Pull the right club and go for the green!
